Described by coach Rob Wilson as an "all action forward", Campbell joined the Vipers last summer following his debut UK season with Manchester Phoenix. Now coach Wilson has persuaded the 28-year-old Canadian to sign up for the 2008-9 campaign.

"Derek is the epitomy of an all-action player," said Wilson today. "He can score goals, make goals for others and isn't afraid to get his nose dirty. And he can look after his teammates when required.

"He is very hardworking, gives 100% effort every night and is a player who displays what Viper hockey is all about."

It is understood that Campbell had offers from teams in Germany and Italy, but spurned them to stay with the Vipers.

Wilson now has two spots to fill in the forward lines, with centres required for the top two lines.

"DC will play on a line with Rob Rankin, and we're looking at a centreman who is quick and aggressive to play with them. Together they should be one of the most explosive lines in the league."

Derek Campbell will be sponsored for the 2008-9 season by DraughTec, who are a returning sponsor from last season.
